In response to Governor Inslee’s Inaugural Address, Republicans say education, job creation and government accountability should be the focus of this year’s Legislature – not tax increases. John Sattgast reports from Olympia.

SATTGAST: Goldendale Representative Gina McCabe delivered the televised Republican response to the governor's speech. . .

McCABE: “House Republicans have three major priorities: provide students with a world-class education; empower families and strengthen communities; and protect taxpayers by holding state agencies accountable.”

SATTGAST: Although historic investments have been made in K-12 education in the past four years, McCabe acknowledged the work to address the McCleary decision is not done. However, she added success in our public schools shouldn't be measured in dollars.

McCABE: “Dropping more money in the bucket does little good if our students aren't prepared for the job market. We must emphasize better student outcomes and closing the skills gap.”

SATTGAST: McCabe said citizens in many areas of the state are still struggling with the economy. They need jobs – not taxes increases.

McCABE: “It's troubling the governor has released a budget that relies on billions of dollars of new taxes. These proposals do not foster business expansion, they stifle it. And they would hit hardest employers and the people who are the very backbone of our economy.”

SATTGAST: Legislative Republicans say they'll work for solutions that advance the state's economy, prioritize schools and essential services, and encourage job growth. John Sattgast, Olympia.
